How Durable is Your Finish?

How Durable is Your Finish?

We get asked all the time by our customers, "How durable is your finish?"
Well, let me start by telling you a short story.

I was cleaning our youngest son's room. While I was dusting his furniture, I removed his lamp from
his night stand and found this beautiful crayon drawing.
"Ahhhhh!" was my first reaction but then again, I was like, "No worries,
it's an original Fable Porch Furniture piece that is topped off with
Vermont Natural Coatings."

With a combination of Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey® top coat and their Non-Toxic,
plant based wood cleaner, removing the crayon portrait was no sweat! I sprayed a liberal
amount of wood cleaner and two minutes later......

VOILA!

Good-bye Mr. Pumpkin!

After more than a decade in search of earth friendly, solvent free coatings, Vermont Natural Coatings
is hands down THE best product we have ever used. The durability and ease of application has
surpassed our greatest expectations. Our goal, beyond the irreplaceable environment, is to
keep our customers and employees safe from harmful chemicals as well as to use
the durable product available.

So, what makes Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey® THE best?

"By using recycled whey protein we eliminate the need for heavy metal driers and displace both the toxic co-binders and carcinogenic solvents typically found in wood finish.  Whey is a natural byproduct of cheese-making, a traditional strength of Vermont agriculture.  Excess whey can end up on fields and in streams.  To help keep our farms and waterways clear of excess whey, our goal is to reuse as much of this byproduct as possible in durable, safe coatings for your home."

So, why use Vermont Natural Coatings Non-Toxic Wood Cleaner?

"Vermont Natural Coatings Wood Cleaner removes dust, dirt, grease, grime, food and stains with an innovative non-toxic formulation that keeps your home clean and safe. This biodegradable, vegetable-based cleaner is part of our ongoing agricultural focus—to find better methods for common tasks using the resources we see around us."

Vermont Natural Coatings Non-Toxic wood cleaner is FREE* with purchase of our
custom, bench-made furniture.

It's Zucchini Time

It's summertime here on the Fable Porch Farm and you know what that means....
FRESH ORGANIC GOODNESS coming out of our garden daily.

Our 2nd garden

Including ZUCCHINI

And every summer when these beauties start coming in, I make my famous zucchini bread.
Today, I would like to share that recipe with you.

What You Need

1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 cup sugar
1 cup finely shredded zucchini
1/4 cup cooking oil
1 egg
1/4 tsp lemon zest
1/2 cup of chopped almonds, pecans, or walnuts (optional)

What You Gotta Do

1- Preheat your oven to 350°
2- Grease the bottom and sides of a loaf pan and set aside
3- Mix flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder lemon zest, salt and nutmeg
together in a medium size mixing bowl and set aside
4- Mix sugar, egg, oil and zucchini together in a medium mixing bowl
5- Add zucchini mixture to dry mixture and stir just until moistened (batter
will be lumpy)
6- Fold in nuts (nuts are totally optional. I personally like it either way)
7- Spoon batter in prepared pan and bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until
a wooden tooth pick inserted  near the center comes out clean

Oh yea! It's lumpy!

Cool in the pan for 10 minutes and then remove from the pan. Cool completely
on a wire rack. The most unfortunate thing you gotta do is wrap it up
and store overnight. I know, but it's totally worth the wait. I love having
my zucchini bread with a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Mmmm mmmm mmmm....The photo totally speaks for itself!

Hope you enjoy it as much as my family does!

Yep! It's A Pickle

Who remembers The Pickle Episode from the Andy Griffith Show? I'm laughing
right now as I write this just thinking about Andy's expression on his
face when takes a bite of her pickles.
Poor Aunt Bea's pickles ended up tasting like kerosene. She's a wiz in the
kitchen but she just can't seem to can pickles.

Well, we're not going to do that now are we? Here is my tried and true recipe for
Kosher-Style Dill Pickles. I snatched this recipe from an old cook book
I found at a yard sale a long time ago but I've also added a little twist
with the Fresh Dill.

What you need:

2lbs of small cucumbers about 4 inches
4 cups of water
4 cups of cider vinegar
6 TBSP of pickling salt
For Awesomeness I use about 14 heads of fresh dill but if you don't have fresh dill,
you can use 7 to 8 TBSP of dill seed instead
Add 1 clove of garlic into each jar (6 cloves total)

What you gotta do:

1- Wash your cucumbers, remove stems, and cut off a slice from each blossom end.
In a large sauce pan combine water, vinegar, and pickling salt.
Bring to a boil.

2- Pack cucumbers loosely into hot STERILIZED pint jars, leaving a 1/2 inch headspace.
Add 2 to 3 heads of dill or 3 to 4 tsp of dill seed to each jar.
Pour hot vinegar mixture over cucumbers, leaving 1/2 inch headspace.
Wipe jar rims and adjust lids.

3- Process in a boiling water canner for 10 minutes (start timing when water begins
to boil) Let stand for 1 week. Makes 6 pints

Ambrosia Maple

The All Natural Beauty
Ambrosia Maple

Ambrosia Maple is one of many wood species we offer here Fable Porch Furniture; from our standard size, .75"-1"and up to 2" thick. We can make a dining room table up to 120" long. With its natural characteristics I would say this is my most favorite species! Did you know that Ambrosia Maple is not a specific species of maple but rather get its natural characteristics from the Ambrosia Beetle that makes its home in the maple tree.

CUTENESS ALERT!!!

Meet Roger. (possibly Regina)
He is one of the 12 chicks that hatched from the 33 eggs we incubated. Out of the 12, he is the only
one with stripes and trust me, he has a personality as unique as his stripes. That is why we have
name him our unofficial mascot of Fable Porch Furniture by March Legend ®.

Here is Roger/Regina 1 day after hatching.

This Isn't Your Ordinary Fried Chicken...

Happy Monday, y'all!
I had such a tremendous request for my Southern Style Fried Chicken recipe yesterday. So here it is. This simple but delicious recipe has been a favorite for my family for many years. The secret to my fried chicken? Crisco. I know, I know, it's full of trans fat. So I found an alternative with NO trans fat; I used Spectrum Organic Butter Flavor Shortening made from sustainably harvested palm oil and it is sourced from dozens of small family farmers. (Thumbs up!) OK, so now for the recipe:

1-Family pack of Organic Chicken Legs and Thighs
2 Eggs (from my lovely ladies here on the farm)
1/2 Cup of milk (I use organic rice milk)
Whisk these two together in a large bowl

2 cups of Organic All Purpose Non-Bleached Flour
2 TBS of Seasoned Salt (I used Old Bay)
1 TBS of Black Pepper
1 TBS of Paprika
Whisk all of these ingredients in a large bowl

In a large cast iron skillet, melt 1-24oz tub of the Spectrum Shortening and heat until it reaches about 325 degrees.

Rinse and pat dry the chicken. Line a large pan with wax paper or aluminum foil. Dip your chicken in the egg/milk mixture and then roll your chicken in the flour mixture. Put the chicken in the lined pan. Add all of the chicken to the pan and fry over medium heat, turning occasionally, until you get a deep golden brown and the inside of the chicken reaches 170 degrees near the bone, about 25 minutes. Drain on a paper towel and voila! You got some awesome Southern Style Fried Chicken.
